The story

Behind the bag.

East Java sits in the Indonesian archipelago's volcanic belt — the same forces that built the islands also built coffee terroir like nowhere else. Volcanic soil, year-round humidity, and traditional wet-hulled processing produce the iconic full-bodied, earthy, low-acid cup.

Our East Java is grown under canopy on family farms — many of them have been growing coffee for three or four generations. The shade preserves biodiversity, keeps the soil alive, and slows the cherries' ripening for more complex sugar development.

Wet-hulling is the traditional Indonesian process: the cherries are pulped, partially dried, then hulled (the parchment removed) while still wet. It's what gives Indonesian coffee its signature dark color and full body.

Sustainability practices

How this coffee is grown.

  • Shade-grown under native and fruit-tree canopy
  • No synthetic fertilizers — multi-generational organic methods
  • Traditional processing preserves cultural knowledge, doesn't industrialize it
  • Smallholder family farms (vs. plantation agriculture)

Challenges & opportunities

Indonesian smallholders face deforestation pressure from palm oil and volatile pricing. Direct relationships with specialty buyers create the price floor that keeps shade-grown coffee viable.

Why we work with them

East Java is the perfect coffee for the drinker who wants depth without acidity — chocolatey, full-bodied, and forgiving on the brew. Pairs beautifully with milk drinks and French press.
